At the first of the year I was hearing all of these promotions gyms and nutrition companies were pushing attempting to cash on the New Year promises people were making to themselves to loose weight and get in shape. As we all know those promises are often broken just as quickly as they were made. But being someone who puts a lot of value in eating right and keeping your physical body in shape; I understand that there is a commitment to a discipline that one has to make to receive the reward of a healthy, fit body. It’s not something that just happens by accident. It’s the reward of effort given to eating properly and exercising regularly. But I began to think about us as Christians and our spiritual well-being. Paul wrote to Timothy and said, “Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.” (1Timothy 4:7b-8). How many of us can devote the time and energy to intentionally build our spiritual strength and develop a healthy life of godliness?
Most believers in America today don’t spend fifteen quality minutes in prayer and/or bible reading daily. Not that fifteen minutes is really ample time to develop a healthy life of godliness, but even that small fraction of time is often sacrificed for other demands that life places on us. Many believers are so out of shape spiritually they don’t even know where to start. The thought of what needs to be done is so overwhelming that most don’t do anything at all. So they continue on just living a casual existence, but with little influence and success in the divine purposes and plans God has ordained for them to walk in. We simply do not have the spiritual stamina to stand in times of trouble, trials, challenges and suffering that so many of us go through and the result is a wavering or even broken faith.
Well, as I pondered this reality I began to hear the Lord speak an idea into my spirit to help believers on path of healthy spiritual living in godliness and maturity of faith. It is what we call the 90 Day Spiritual Challenge. In this Challenge we provide each believer with 10 things they can do to improve their spiritual health. We encourage each believer to set personal goals and give themselves 90 days to apply any number of the 10 listed things provided to their life. The ones I encourage each person to do first, is read and pray daily. After the first 90 days add one or a few more things to your regime for another 90 days. If you’re already doing some, then choose from the list of things that you’re not currently doing.
All of us could use some growth in our life spiritually, and this happens as we commit time and effort to our spiritual health in godliness.
